The Romanian Ministry of Energy has issued a request for renewable energy providers to indicate interest in participating in forthcoming auctions for clean electricity. The deadline for interested developers to indicate interest is December 30.
The auction will be structured as a contract-for-difference (CfD) auction. The government will offer the selected developers 15-year power purchase agreements.
According to Energynomics, the Romanian government will organize the first auction for up to 750 MW of solar capacity and 750 MW of wind capacity by the end of June. The facilities must have a minimum capacity of 5 MW, with no size limit.
“According to Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the first CfD round for at least 1,500 MW of capacity is expected to be organised in the second half of 2023 and the second in the first half of 2025 for an additional 2,000 MW,” said Mihai Balan, the executive director of the Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association (RPIA) in November.
“It will be a significant achievement for our NRRP if the first capacity backed by this mechanism are operational by 2026. Originally, we anticipated that the scheme would be presented to the public by the end of this year. However, given the current state of the energy market and the fact that we are steadily moving toward a regulated market, it is safe to assume that we will not see the details until at least early 2023.
