Rayzon Solar will be the first Indian producer to enter the US market with a 500MW facility.

Rayzon Solar, an Indian solar company, has announced it will build a 500MW solar module plant in the United States and increase its current 1GW of production capacity in India.

Rayzon will be the first solar company from India to start making things in the US, the company said. The company plans to increase the capacity of its Indian activities from 1.5GW per year to 2.5GW per year. No time frame has been given yet.

On its social media sites, the company revealed that the US factory will make tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) modules.

SEG Solar bought a 2GW TOPCon manufacturing plant in Texas last month. As companies start to use it on a large scale and replace tried-and-true passivated emitter/rear cell (PERC) technology, the technology is becoming more and more common in the business.

In a study released earlier this month, Clean Energy Associates found that the US is expected to pay the highest market prices for solar panels in the world. Even as PERC is phased out and TOPCon becomes more common, the US will still pay a premium for the new technology. This is because it takes time for TOPCon sites to be set up and the price of PERC is going down as producers try to sell it for less.

Both the US and India have been working to expand their manufacturing bases and bring solar companies to their countries. With the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) incentives for production and deployment, Rayzon’s move shows a greater trust in the future of the US solar market. As of December of last year, three months after the IRA became law, the US had plans to make 22GW worth of modules and cells.

Since then, big US capacity news has come from companies like JA Solar and Qcells.
