NASA has released stunning aerial images of China’s Great Solar Wall, a massive solar power installation in Inner Mongolia’s Kubuqi Desert. Once known as a barren “sea of death,” the desert has been transformed into a hub of photovoltaic energy.

As of August 2024, the site hosts approximately 5.4 GW of installed solar capacity, including the 2 GW plant by China Three Gorges and the 300 MW Junma Solar Power Station shaped like a horse. The project aims to reach a staggering 100 GW capacity by 2030, spanning 400 km.

NASA highlighted the region’s sunny climate, flat terrain, and proximity to industrial hubs as ideal for solar power. The installation is part of China’s ambitious plan to harness renewable energy for powering major cities like Beijing.
