Huawei Technologies and the BGMEA have struck an agreement to install solar panels on the roofs of 4,000 garment manufacturers. Huawei will install 2 GW of rooftop solar capacity as part of the agreement. Each and every factory is owned by BGMEA members.

Upon finished, the rooftop systems will provide approximately 2,600 GWh of green power annually. The BGMEA will regulate the process and function as a conduit for communication between Huawei and plant owners.

Faruque Hassan, president of the BGMEA, stated that energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon footprint reduction have been one of the association’s primary concerns in order to promote sustainable growth and retain the industry’s long-term competitiveness.

According to Pan Junfeng, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh), the need for power in the Bangladeshi textile industry is increasing.

“Huawei will collaborate with BGMEA to meet the need for increased power supply through green solutions (solar power),” said Pan, adding that this will assist to alleviate excess pressure on the national power system.

The number of “green factories” in Bangladesh is the most in the world, according to the US Green Building Council. It is stated that over 500 other garment factories in the nation are now awaiting accreditation.

Currently, Bangladesh has the ability to generate 948 MW of power from renewable sources. Due to a lack of imported oil and gas, the nation is currently experiencing a severe electrical crisis, as numerous power facilities stay offline.
