An official from the Ministry of Railways told APP that the effort is expected to save the department RS. 1.8 billion in its first phase. Subsequent phases will contain additional stations, offices, and facilities. In the first phase, Pakistan Railways plans to convert around 99 formations, including important railway stations, nine divisional headquarters, and other critical offices, to solar power.

According to the official, Pakistan Railways would use the expertise of the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) to convert its network to solar power. To reduce Pakistan Railways’ fiscal hardship, the agency has decided to shift the railway network to solar energy.

He noted that the decision to use solar electricity is a strategic move aimed at reducing the financial load on Pakistan Railways, which has been experiencing financial challenges.
