Longi launches all new back contact module, promising 22.8% efficiency

Longi has introduced a line of modules with an all-new hybrid passivated back contact cell technology, claiming a maximum module efficiency in mass production of 22.8%. Initially, the company would provide modules with 54, 60, 66, and 72 cells for rooftop and distributed generation applications.

Longi Solar has introduced a new module series and “hybrid passivated back contact” cell technology. The new Hi-MO 6 series will initially be available in four distinct forms, with a primary focus on rooftop and distributed generating projects, and will feature devices with integrated module-level power electronics. The series will also be offered in a variety of BIPV-appropriate hues.

In solar manufacturing, the year 2022 will be mostly characterised by manufacturers converting to heterojunction (HJT) technology or improving their PERC capacity to make tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) cells. Longi aims for even greater efficiency by producing back-contact technology, despite the fact that it is a less-established technology with enormous promise.

The new product line’s datasheets guarantee module efficiencies of up to 22.3%. Additionally, Longi anticipates a maximum production efficiency of 22.8%. In addition, the business anticipates that their new cell technology will provide many of the same advantages as TOPCon and HJT.

“Modules equipped with HPBC cell technology can create a bigger amount of energy in high-temperature and low-irradiation situations, as well as have improved power degradation performance,” the company explained. In common installation settings, Longi’s models indicate an average yield improvement of up to 10% compared to PERC.

With Hi-MO 6, Longi maintains the 182mm cell format that it debuted some years ago. The modules will be available in 54, 60, 66, and 72-cell configurations with power ratings ranging from 410 W to 575 W.

Artist and Supervisor
In addition to the new cell technology, Longi is bringing numerous other module advancements that are expected to appeal to rooftop and distributed market clients. One module in the “Guardian” series will have module-level power electronics in the form of Longi’s intelligent optimizer. This enables flexible system design, real-time monitoring and optimization, and fast shutdown capabilities, which are a necessity in an expanding number of rooftop markets.

Another module in the series, marketed under the name ‘Artist,’ will be highly customisable and available in a variety of colours to accommodate building-integrated projects. Back-contact technology itself offers greater aesthetics, since modules may be constructed with less gaps between cells and without busbars, resulting in a more uniform look.

The line is completed by two further products: the ‘Explorer,’ which will be offered with a black backsheet, and the ‘Scientist,’ which aims for the best efficiency possible.

All modules will come with a 15-year product guarantee and a 25-year performance warranty that stipulates a 0.4% yearly deterioration from year 2 to year 25, resulting in 88.9% of their initial performance after 25 years of operation.

After today’s announcement, Longi anticipates having the whole Hi-MO 6 lineup in mass production by the end of 2022.
